The Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) is designed for Cadets who are already/would like to be with a National Guard or Reserve unit and are actively drilling with them.  You will receive valuable training and experience in the SMP program.

There are two ways to sign a SMP contract:

1.  Attend Basic Combat Training and Advance Individual Training (AIT)

2.  Complete the first two years of ROTC

As a contracted, SMP Cadet, you will no longer be the enlisted soldier that you went into the unit as, but rather you will drill as a Cadet.  The benefits of drilling as a Cadet include:

  • E-5 drill pay/AT pay
  • Work as the assistant Platoon Leader (or depending on the needs of the unit you will be the Platoon Leader)
  • Gain Second Lieutenant experience while working with the chain of command
  • Receive a commission into the U.S. Army

If you're looking for financial assistance, the SMP program can help out immensely with the cost of living and college.  As a contracted, SMP Cadet you will be entitled to receive:

  • $4,500 yearly tuition assistance
  • $250 per drill (E-5 pay)
  • $300-500 monthly ROTC stipend
  • $350 monthly kicker
  • $300 monthly G.I. Bill

If you are certain that you want to stay in a reserve component upon graduating and commissioning into the Army, you can also sign the Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) contract which will ensure that you remain a National Guard or Reserve officer.  Choosing to sign the GRFD contract can get you up to a $20,000 signing bonus*  If you choose to sign the GRFD contract, you must also be SMP.

*Cannot contract for 365 days after receiving the bonus money
